| English as a Foreign Language(EFL)has gained significant importance due to the growing influence of English in international communication. This has led to increased attention and concern in various countries, with more learners opting to study English as their foreign language. However,in China,EFL faces a challenge where the input and output of English proficiency are not directly proportional. In light of this issue,it is crucial to conduct research on foreign language learning engagement to understand the factors that contribute to effective language learning.Scholars have already conducted extensive research in this field, primarily focusing on learners’ individual characteristics such as motivation, attitude, and anxiety. While these studies have yielded positive results, there has been a relative lack of research on environmental factors and the economic aspects of foreign language learning engagement. The economic dimension of EFL is often overlooked in both the economics and linguistics domains. However, language and economic activities are inherently interconnected. This paper argues that studying foreign language learning engagement from the perspective of language economics can provide new insights into addressing the persistent challenges facing EFL in China.Language economics recognizes the interconnectedness of language and economic activities, and by considering the economic aspects of language learning, researchers can gain a more comprehensive understanding of the complexities involved.Drawing from a range of domestic and international literature sources, this paper seeks to utilize theories and methodologies from language economics and human capital theory,Its primary objective is to quantitatively estimate the key factors that influence foreign language learning engagement. The study focuses on a sample of 323 undergraduate students enrolled in engineering colleges and universities. It considers individual influencing factors, external influencing factors, social influencing factors, and the specific nature of foreign language learning engagement. The research aims to address the following three central questions: 1)What are the primary factors influencing foreign language learning engagement, and to what extent do they impact the level of engagement? 2)What are the economic attributes associated with foreign language learning engagement? 3)How can the economic optimization of foreign language learning engagement be achieved? By investigating these research questions, the study intends to provide valuable insights and recommendations to enhance the efficiency of foreign language teaching and improve individual language learning engagement in the Chinese context. This endeavor encompasses proposing strategies for optimizing resource allocation, designing effective language learning policies, and suggesting innovative teaching methodologies that align with economic principles. The study aspires to make significant contributions to the field of foreign language education in China, offering references and insights that can be utilized to enhance the effectiveness of foreign language teaching and improve the efficiency of individual foreign language learning engagement.Ultimately, its overarching goal is to optimize language learning outcomes and promote the economic benefits that proficiency in foreign languages can yield for individuals and society as a whole. The findings of the study provide valuable insights into the factors influencing foreign language learning engagement.Firstly,it revealed that individual factors, including gender, grade, major, learning motivation, attitude, and strategies, significantly influence the level of engagement among engineering undergraduates. These factors underscore the importance of personal characteristics and motivations in determining students’ investment in language learning.Additionally, the study emphasized the role of external factors, such as the school environment, financial support, family background, social services, and peer interactions,in shaping language learning engagement.Supportive school environments, adequate resources, positive family support, and access to social services contribute to enhancing students’ commitment to language learning. Moreover, the study explored the economic benefits associated with foreign language learning engagement, aligning with the principles of human capital theory.Language learning is viewed as an investment in human capital, characterized by low costs and high returns, making it an appealing investment option.Furthermore, the research highlighted the diverse range of benefits derived from foreign language learning engagement. These encompass not only measurable economic gains but also non-market communicative benefits.Effective communication skills, cultural understanding, and intercultural competence contribute to personal growth, expanded social networks, and increased opportunities in various professional domains.Based on the study’s findings, several recommendations are proposed to optimize foreign language learning engagement.Schools should prioritize enhancing the quality of language instruction by incorporating practical elements into language courses, facilitating ample opportunities for language practice, and fostering student participation and enthusiasm.Furthermore, the provision of scholarships and incentives can serve as effective motivators for students to actively engage in language learning. In terms of policy implications,it is crucial for educational institutions and policymakers to acknowledge the connection between foreign language learning input and economic development.Efforts should be made to integrate foreign language learning with professional skills, establish robust language certification systems, promote language education and training, and encourage language learning within workplace settings.By doing so,the economic value and social significance of language proficiency can be fully realized, thereby enhancing the overall effectiveness of foreign language teaching and individual language learning outcomes.Overall, this study contributes to the understanding of foreign language learning involvement by considering a comprehensive range of factors and incorporating insights from language economics and human capital theory. The findings offer valuable guidance for improving foreign language education and maximizing the benefits of individual language learning engagement in China. |
