| With the implementation of the New Curriculum Criterion and further curriculum reforms, the issue of insufficient classroom teaching time has become increasingly prominent, prompting English teachers to focus more on developing their students’ reading competence. While reading teaching and learning is at the core of English teaching in junior middle school in our country, relying solely on classroom time to carry out reading activities hinders students’ vocabulary development.Additionally, junior high school English teachers often neglect the importance of extracurricular reading.Depending solely on the content in the teaching materials not only restricts the development of students’ reading skills but also hampers their language application. As such, the current situation of extracurricular whole book reading in junior high school is worth researching as it is an essential objective of English teaching. The study aims to investigate the impact of “extracurricular whole book reading”on the English reading ability and character development of junior high school students. The study utilizes three research tools, including a reading test,a questionnaire, and an interview with students from two parallel classes in a middle school in Zibo city. The study aims to answer three research questions:(1)Whether extracurricular whole book reading can improve the English reading ability of junior high school students?(2)What is the impact of extracurricular whole book reading on the development of English reading character of junior high school students?(3)How does extracurricular whole book reading impact English reading teaching in junior high school?Through the analysis about the results of tests, questionnaires and interviews before and after the experiment,it is found that:(1)Extracurricular whole book reading can improve the English reading ability of junior high school students.(2)Extracurricular whole book reading is conducive to the development of the English reading character of junior high school students, and the students’ reading habits and reading experience have been better developed.(3)Extracurricular whole book reading has a positive impact on the English reading teaching in junior high school. All the interviewees believe that the extracurricular whole book reading has a positive impact on the development of junior high school students’ English reading literacy. To a certain extent, the findings of this research can serve as a valuable point of reference for the implementation of whole book reading in English classes and provide educators with innovative ideas for English reading instruction at the junior high school level.Nevertheless, given the limited duration of the study, the relatively small sample size, and the researcher’s own skill constraints,it is evident that this investigation still has some limitations that should be addressed in future research endeavors. To address the current study’s limitations, forthcoming research could prolong the study’s duration, broaden the sample size, and diversify the research techniques utilized to glean a more comprehensive and accurate understanding of the topic. |
