With the construction of the “21st Century Maritime Silk Road” initiative and the implementation of “Maritime Power” strategy, the exchange opportunities between China and the world in marine economy and marine culture are increasing. At the same time,in order to promote Chinese culture to “go global”,China’s demand for English translation of its own cultural texts is also rising. Therefore, publicizing the development of China’s marine civilization to the world is of great significance. This report takes History of Chinese and Western Marine Civilization(Chapter 1),a general college course textbook,as the source text of this translation practice. This textbook translation is a relatively new one, which is neither scientific translation nor cultural translation. Its translation should reflect the clarity and logic of the original text and fit the original text enough. In chapter one and two of this report, the translator first introduces the project, the text features and the translation process. In chapter three, the translator adopts the methods of case analysis and descriptive research to analyze the translation strategies, methods and skills adopted in the Chinese-English translation of this cultural textbook from three aspects: vocabulary, sentence pattern and discourse. On the whole, the translator mainly adopts the strategy of combining domestication with foreignization.Specifically,in terms of vocabulary, literal translation, transliteration, literal translation with intra-text annotation and transliteration with intra-text annotation are mainly chosen for culture-loaded words and four-character phrases; In terms of sentence pattern, the translator mainly adopts the method of quoting famous translation and combining intralingual and interlingual translation for verses and quotation, and takes the means of reorganizing and amplification for long and difficult sentences; In terms of discourse, the cohesion and coherence of the text are addressed according to the English expression habits on the premise of preserving the text structure of the source text.In Chapter Four, the translator summarizes the contents of the whole report by using the method of experience summary, and points out the experience and shortcomings gained in the translation process.Through the translation practice, the translator arrives at the conclusion that closely fitting the original text and improving the accuracy of the translated text are the foundation and soul of the translation of cultural textbooks. If cutting ties with the original text in terms of vocabulary, sentence pattern and discourse, the target text cannot achieve the duty and purpose of imparting knowledge as a textbook. The translator hopes that this report can provide some reference for the study of English translation in the corresponding field.
