Don DeLillo(1936-)is one of the most influential contemporary American writers.DeLillo’s works are concerned with people’s physical and mental conditions in the postmodern era which is characterized by the media invasion, consumerism expansion and the encroachment of terrorism. The novel Point Omega(2010)contains profound body presentation.Based on the media theory of Marshall McLuhan, this thesis examines the subjective construction of Americans, which is centered on the body in the media age from aspects of the physical body, political body, and social body. There are five chapters in this thesis.Chapter One makes a brief introduction to Don DeLillo and his novel Point Omega. It systematically summarizes the research on the novel and presents the theoretical framework and thesis statement.Chapter Two mainly explains the consumption behavior of the physical body in image media.Image works stimulate visual and emotional consumption by presenting different physical bodies, which reveals the essence of that individual losing body subjectivity in the image media dominated by consumerism.Chapter Three focuses on the modification of the political body in architectural media. The productive political body and the biopolitical body respectively exhibit a tendency toward rationalization and individualization.Chapter Four analyzes the repressed social body in the word media. The spoken words and written words manipulated by ideology repress self-expression.In this sense, the social body shows the characteristics of marginalization and ambivalence.Chapter Five is the conclusion, summing up the main points and the practical significance of body writing. To sum up,people’s body expressions are fragile and contradictory in the field of postmodern media culture.Through the interpretation of body writing in Point Omega, this thesis reveals the important role of body autonomy in subjective construction.Only by emphasizing the return of the body, can contemporary American individuals build a healthy media ecological environment so as to promote self-awareness and selfrealization.
