Representation Of Humor In The Translation Of Comic Novel

The text chosen for this case study is from the comedy novel Book Lovers by the American author Emily Henry.The translator translates the content of the prologue to the third chapter,describes the translation problems that arise during the translation process and examines how to reproduce the humorous effects that appear in the text.The author,Emily,uses many humorous words in her novel in order to emphasize the characters,create a light-hearted atmosphere and reflect the culture of the source language,while at the same time creating some difficulties for the translator.According to Henri Bergson’s humor theory,the translator divides translation problems into several parts: mechanical humor mixed with vitality,humor of character and humor of language.According to Itamar Even Zohar’s Polysystem Theory,the translator transforms the position of translated literature in the literary pluralistic system.It aims to solve the translation problems in the text.By understanding the American national culture,historical changes and the author’s writing characteristics,the translator applies the translation strategy of domestication or foreignization to translate the humorous words in the text,records the translation difficulties in the process of translation,discusses and studies the translation problems in conjunction with the theory of “reader’s response”,and writes the translation practice report.Through this translation practice,the translator applies what he has learned to the study of translation problems.Through this translation practice and the writing of the translation practice report,the translator hopes to make contributions to relevant translation practice and translation research.
