Education has always been valued by the people, especially basic education. The development of individuals in all aspects of childhood will affect their growth in subsequent stages. The stage where children in the senior grades of primary school are in is very critical, which is just the transition from primary school to junior high school. This stage is also an important period to correct children’s good learning attitude and cultivate their interest in learning related activities. The level of children’s learning involvement in primary school determines their various learning states in the later stage.Previous studies have shown that a good school climate has a positive impact on students’ input in learning, and students with strong school belonging are more active in all aspects of the school. Therefore, this study intends to examine how school belonging and school climate affect the student engagement of senior primary school students. This study surveyed 1141 senior primary school students(grades 4 to 6)in two primary schools in Chengdu, and tested the Chinese version of Delaware Student Engagement Scale-Student(DSES-S),Delaware School Climate Scale-Student 2016(DSCS-S)and Psychological Sense of School Membership(PSSM),using statistical methods such as variance analysis and correlation analysis. This study is divided into three parts. In the first study,a survey and analysis of the current situation of student engagement of senior primary school students was investigated. The second study explored the relationship among the engagement of senior primary school students, school climate and school belonging. The third study designed a targeted intervention scheme to explore whether group counseling had a significant effect on the improvement of engagement of senior primary school students. The results show that:(1)The overall level of student engagement of senior primary school students(grades 4to 6)is above average. There are significant differences in the level of student engagement in terms of gender, grade, place of origin, whether student cadres, parents’ educational level, and family economic situation, but there are no significant differences in whether only children and left-behind children.(2)There is a significant positive correlation between the engagement of senior primary school students and the school climate, and a significant positive correlation with the school belonging of senior primary school students.School climate is positively correlated with school belonging.(3)School belonging plays a partial mediating role in the influence of school climate on engagement of senior primary school students.School climate can directly affect the engagement of senior primary school students, and can also indirectly affect the engagement of senior primary school students through affecting the school belonging.(4)Targeted group counseling has a significant effect on the improvement of engagement of senior primary school students. The good school climate perceived by senior primary school students has a positive impact on their engagement, and can also indirectly influence their engagement through the sense of school belonging. Therefore,by improving the school climate and enhancing students’ sense of belonging to school,it is beneficial to improve the level of engagement of senior primary school students.
