Study On Chaozhou Place Names

Place names are often used in People’s Daily life,it records people’s production and life,showing unique geographical characteristics and humanistic connotation,and with the development of The Times,the importance of the study of place names is becoming increasingly prominent.There are more than 20,000 place names in Chaozhou but there is a lack of relevant analysis and related academic achievements.The study of the characteristics of Chaozhou place names in different dimensions can provide a basis for the standardization of names and further explore the development and evolution of geographical names.Clarifying the excellent historical culture contained in place names can improve people’s understanding of Chaoshan culture and enhance people’s sense of cultural identity and protection.Exploring the characteristics and cultural connotation of Chaozhou place names can set up the local government’s awareness of the protection of place names.Based on the number,current situation and source of geographical names obtained by the Chaozhou government in the second national geographical name Census,the paper takes the"Standard Geographical Names of Chaozhou" as the main reference material.Supported by the basic theories of place names and linguistics,the paper uses synchronic and diachronic methods to discuss the characteristics and language culture of geographical names of Chaozhou.It is found that Chaozhou place names contain rich historical culture and local characteristics.Firstly,the paper introduces the number of place names in Chaozhou,classifies them from the perspective of general names and specific names,and reveals the general characteristics of place names in Chaozhou from the specific naming characteristics of three jurisdictions.On this basis,using the methods of exegesis and linguistics,the characters of place names are summarized:the characters of physical geographical entities are closely related to the terrain of Chaozhou;The characters of human geographic al place names are in the same vein as those in southern Fujian,and also show the life track of Hakka people and She people in the tide;The language sources of geographical names include Hakka dialect,Minnan dialect and Zhuang dialect.Then from the perspective of the internal form and external form of place names,the structure and generation of place names are analyzed.Then the place names in the history of the county records as the old place names,compared with the current place names,sorted out the similarities and differences between the old and new place names.Starting from the reasons of place names,it is revealed that the influencing factors of place names are mainly related to terrain,family names,economic products and so on.The cultural connotation of place names can be seen by integrating the migration footprints of ethnic groups and the culture of overseas Chinese.The results show that the vividness of place names in Chaozhou is different due to the difference of terrain and economic level.Their name is the result of many factors,people’s migration makes their cultural connotation more rich.
