| The material of this translation practice report is selected from Chapter 16 of Bernard Shaw,a famous biography written by British biographer Michael Holroyd.The material,which is colloquial with many quotations,sayings,and long sentences,mainly tells about the great success of Shaw’s play Apple Cart in Malvern,and shows the struggle for power and democracy and the revival of industry and science under the background of the times,reflecting Shaw’s good wishes as a realist writer.In addition to reading parallel texts and searching for relevant materials,this translation practice mainly takes Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory as a guide to analyze the translation practice material from the lexical,syntactic,and textual level in the process of translation and proofreading.At the lexical level,it mainly adopts four-character structures,conversion of part of speech,word choice,addition and subtraction.At the syntactic level,it mainly adopts the following methods: literal translation,division translation and the negation.At the discourse level,the methods of adjusting word order,coordinating rhetoric and using common sayings are adopted.The quality of the translation thereby has been ensured.This translation practice can enrich the literature material of the domestic study of Shaw,and also help the Chinese readers who are interested in Shaw and British society.At the same time,it also deepens our understanding of biography and improves our translation ability of biography. |
