Louise Erdrich,an outstanding contemporary American Indian female writer, has received multiple honors such as the American Writers Lifetime Achievement Award for her delicate and unique writing from a female perspective and her concern for the social issues of American Indian ethnicity. Her novel Future Home of the Living God(2017)as a novel focusing on women’s reproductive issues, brings readers serious thoughts about struggle for women’s rights to improve the situation of women. With the theory of biopolitics, this thesis interprets the struggle for women’s violated reproductive rights, suppressed liberty rights, deprived right to life in the dimensions of biopower, disciplinary power and sovereign power. The thesis is divided into three chapters, except for introduction and conclusion. The introduction retrospects the background of Louis Erdrich’s literary creation, summarizes the research status on Future Home of the Living God at home and abroad and presents the thoughts and main contents of this thesis. The second chapter explores the violation of women’s reproductive rights under the control of the biopower, presenting women’s struggle against biopower for reproductive self-determination by refusing to become a reproductive tool. The third chapter focuses on suppressed liberty right under the manipulation of disciplinary power and shed lights on women’s struggle for physical and spiritual freedom by escaping from places with disciplinary functions. The fourth chapter delves into the deprivation of women’s right to life under sovereign power, the loss of women’s homeland as bare life and the loss of life in a state of exception, and the struggle to defend their right to live through the construction of women’s communities. The conclusion develops the significance of struggle for women’s rights, arguing that the theory of biopolitics has a significant role in interpreting of Erdrich’s work Future Home of the Living God.In conclusion, when faced with a series of violations of the biopower, the suppression of disciplinary power and the domination of the sovereign power, women need to resist and fight for their rights as well as to defend the reproductive rights, the right to body and the right to life of the female group.By exploring the struggle for women’s rights in Future Home of the Living God under the perspective of biopolitics, this thesis aims to provide a broader vision for the women to escape from the dilemma of existence,in order to stimulate people to think about the protection and development of women’s rights.
