The Study Of Clothing Discourse In Victorian Realist Novels | | Posted on:2024-06-20 | Degree:Master | Type:Thesis | | Country:China | Candidate:Y J Qin | Full Text:PDF | | GTID:2555307145993479 | Subject:Comparative Literature and World Literature | | Abstract/Summary: | PDF Full Text Request | | The development of literature reached a climax during the Victorian era(1837-1901),and realistic novels were the pinnacle of many literary genres during the Victorian era.Clothing description is an important part of character description.Clothing has historical significance,fashion has the function of recording changes in the times,and aesthetics can reflect changes in the will of the times.This article selects 14 classic realist novel texts,including Vanity Fair,Jane Eyre,and Tess of the D’Urberville...The description of clothing reflects the relationship between the era,clothing,and individuals.Under the influence of the unique national tradition and Victorian background of Britain,novelists have a certain degree of exposure to reality,but also have limitations.They naively attempt to alleviate social conflicts through moral reconstruction.The changes in fashion styles also reflect changes in social thinking.Then,a deep integration of various novel texts was conducted to explore the role of clothing discourse in the novel.Using a part of the theory of "identity",clothing is considered as one of the representations of a character’s level of identity.The character expresses themselves or their rebellion against society and the times through clothing;Or the vanity of pursuing fame and fortune;Or a down-to-earth attitude of struggle.The traditional trend of "looking up" in the UK is also one of the factors affecting fashion forms and clothing discourse expression.Then,the three causes of the above clothing discourse were analyzed,including rural complex,religious beliefs,and aristocratic culture.The British have a very deep affection for the countryside,and their portrayal of the beautiful and pure sons of the countryside reflects their admiration for nature.The religious beliefs of realist writers are very complex,and they have a resistance to religious forms,but the core of religion is reflected everywhere in their works.This is also a crisis of ’identity’.In addition,the unique gentlemanly and aristocratic cultures of the British are intertwined,giving them an innate respect for the nobility,which is also an important reason for the formation of their "upward looking" trend.After analyzing the expression and reasons of identity and class in clothing discourse,this article focuses on the feminism reflected in various novels.A beautiful woman should possess both an innocent and natural temperament,a strong sense of religious morality,and a reverence for elegance and dignity.These contradictory and demanding demands laid the foundation for the tragic fate of women in the Victorian era.It is difficult for male writers to express the unique charm of women themselves and truly understand the survival pressure of women.Due to varying degrees of limitations of the times,female writers may not all have the courage to resist,but even so,they strive to speak up for women and provide understanding and warmth to their compatriots.Finally,the significance of clothing for society and individuals,as well as the essence of fashion,was summarized.The more diverse the clothing,the more it can showcase the freedom and humanization of this era.So clothing represents an individual’s value orientation and willingness,and should not be misinterpreted or criticized. | | Keywords/Search Tags: | Clothing discourse, The Victorian era, Realistic novel, feminism | PDF Full Text Request | Related items |
