The source text is excerpted from the first and second chapters of Jan Susina’s literary criticism The Place of Lewis Carroll in Children’s Literature, which explores Lewis Carroll’s contributions to the field of children’s literature and delves into the ideological contents, artistic features, and creative style of Carroll’s works. The translation of literary criticism requires not only the faithful rendition of the source text but also consideration of its literary qualities and readability in the target language.Guided by Newmark’s Semantic Translation and Communicative Translation theories, this report presents translation methods and techniques at three levels: lexical, syntactic, and textual. At the lexical level, the author employs techniques such as intext annotation, footnoting, semantic extension, and addition to achieve a balance between accuracy and literary expression.Syntactically, adjustments in word order, voice conversion, and division are employed to enhance the fluency and conciseness of the target text. Moreover, cohesive devices like reference and substitution are utilized at the textual level to strengthen the logical coherence of the translation. This report examines the influential role of Semantic Translation and Communicative Translation theories in literary criticism through the analysis of specific examples in the translation process. The aim is to provide valuable insights and assistance for future translations of relevant texts.
