Adolescence is a particular period of rapid physical and mental development, and psychological problems such as dissatisfaction with body image are more common. In recent years, studies have found that low satisfaction with teenagers’ body image is widespread, and there is a growing serious trend.Sociocultural theories and the triple impact model suggest that passive social media use can affect individuals’ satisfaction with body image, which can be achieved by comparing the mediating role of body image on social media. In addition, this study is further combined with the theory of objectification to explore the moderating effect of self-objectification.In this study,576 junior middle school students were surveyed by questionnaire in 4 middle schools in 4prefectures and cities in China. Conclusions were reached:(1)A significant positive correlation exists between passive social networking site use and body image comparison in junior middle school students. There is a significant negative correlation between the body image satisfaction of junior middle school students.(2)Social media body image comparison significantly negatively affected body image satisfaction in junior middle school students.(3)The relationship between passive social networking sites and body image satisfaction of junior high school students was still significant after joining the social networking site body image comparison,a partial mediating role.(4)In highly self-objectified individuals, passive social networking site use has a significant positive predictive effect on the body image of the social networking site. Therefore, this study makes the following educational recommendations:(1)Promote young people’s active use of social networking sites, reduce passive browsing, and enhance interpersonal communication.(2)Be alert to teenagers’ unconscious body image comparison when using social networking sites, and transfer their attention to more valuable information.(3)Encourage teenagers to set up correct body image concepts and subject beliefs and reduce self-objectification.(4)Try to use evidence-based treatment to improve adolescent girls’ and boys’ body image, attention and mental health.
