| As an important bridge and link for political, economic and cultural exchanges between China and the West,Chinese ancient Silk Road has promoted the development of the friendly exchanges between China and other trading countries in Asia,Africa and Europe in history. Therefore, the translation of Silk Road themes not only actively responds to national policy of “The Belt and Road Initiative” in recent years, but also helps the outside world better understand China through disseminating China’s culture and policies. In addition, the translation researches about the Silk Road are still scarce at home.Based on these, this thesis chooses the excerpt(Chapter 2)of the book Through the Silk Road as the translation material.Due to the different material, linguistic, religious and social background between China and the West, cultural default phenomenon often occurs in translation, which seriously affects the target language readers’ understanding and acceptance of the Chinese culture. Therefore, based on the translation compensation theory, this thesis selects and analyzes three types of cultural default phenomenon, including material cultural default, social cultural default and linguistic cultural default, and explained the necessity of compensation for cultural default. At the same time, according to the different causes of translation loss, the thesis selects appropriate translation compensation strategies to analyze and translate the materials, and finally, the thesis generalizes the methods suitable for three types of cultural default.During the research, this thesis attempts to address the following questions: firstly, what translation strategies should translator respectively adopt to deal with material cultural default, social cultural default and linguistic cultural default;secondly, what are the common translation compensation strategies used in translating three types of cultural default?Under the guidance of translation compensation theory, the author hopes to reconstruct the cultural default content by using pertinent translation compensation methods,so that people can better understand the real Silk Road and silk culture, and the successful cross-cultural communication can be achieved. It is also hoped to shade some light on the further research of such translations. |
