| Klara and the Sun is a science fiction set in the near future, with the artificial robot Klara as the first narrative point of view.Although it has the appearance of a science fiction, its essence is still close to Kazuo Ishiguro’s usual theme of love and human heart. The novel tells the story of Klara,an artificial robot, who prays to the “Sun” to save her young master Josie.Scholars mostly choose Klara’s perspective to study this work, and rarely explore the value and significance of the important factor of the “Sun”.Therefore, this thesis intends to select the “Sun” as the research object, analyze its imagery at different levels in the novel, explore its value and reveal the hidden cultural and social connotations in the novel. This thesis starts from the “Sun”,relies on the close reading method combined with imagery theory to study the “Sun” in Klara and the Sun.This thesis classifies the“Sun” imagery in the novel Klara and the Sun,explores the connection between the“Sun” and different characters and things in the novel from three aspects: nature imagery, power imagery and salvation imagery, and then discovers the important influences of different levels of imagery represented by the “Sun”.The nature imagery of the “Sun” clarifies the relationship between nature and “life”.It witnesses and participates in many classic scenes in the novel and reflects the inner feelings of different characters. The power imagery of the “Sun” confirms the relationship between human beings and technology and satirizes the absurdity of class conversion. It also shows the relationship between nature and human society. The salvation imagery of the“Sun” highlights the “Sun” as a spiritual support for the characters in the novel, helping Klara to achieve self-salvation.It also helps Josie’s mother and Rick’s mother to realize their spiritual salvation by fulfilling their love for their children. It is their soul salvation by guiding Josie and Rick out of their loneliness and difficulties. The different levels of the “Sun” imagery reflect the feelings and experiences of different characters in the novel, and at the same time bring a new perspective to the study of Klara and the Sun.This thesis uses imagery theory to explore the “Sun” in Klara and the Sun,reveals the meaning of the existence of the “Sun” and the cultural and social connotations in the novel, prompts readers to deeply understand the author’s writing on the themes of“human heart”,“love” and “loneliness” from different angles, and further thinks about the writer Kazuo Ishiguro’s writing of the “Sun” to show the social significance and value of nature to the development of technology and human society. |
