Zheng Xiaoxu(1860-1938),a politician,poet,and calligrapher from Minxian County,Fujian Province,has undeniably significant political misconduct as a politician,but his calligraphy achievements were formed before the misconduct.Therefore,from the perspective of inheriting traditional Chinese calligraphy,he explored his ideas and creative achievements on steles before the misconduct in order to seek positive exploration and experience for the development of our contemporary calligraphy creation.This article starts with Zheng Xiaoxu’s family background and the origin of his study of calligraphy,and probes into his family style and the guidance of the enlightenment teacher to the germination of Zheng Xiaoxu’s personal calligraphy.After that,it sorts out Zheng Xiaoxu’s calligraphy learning experience and the formation of the concept of steles in chronological order,as well as the calligraphy practice under the concept of steles.Finally,it summarizes the enlightenment of Zheng Xiaoxu’s concept of steles on calligraphy creation from two perspectives,namely,the Republic of China period and the contemporary era,providing new ideas for calligraphy learning and creation.
