Continuation writing,which closely combines reading comprehension with writing output,and content creation with language imitation is conducive to cultivating students’ ability of comprehensive language application.However,students have little interest in continuation writing,and even resist it.And most students have problems such as content deviation from the main story line,far-fetched logic cohesion,and language style inconsistent with the above.In addition,most of the studies on continuation writing focus on the promoting effect and the factors affecting collaboration.There are few studies on the teaching of continuation writing.In this kind of studies,few scholars apply Theme-rheme Theory to the teaching of continuation writing in senior high school and carry out research.This study uses questionnaire,text analysis and test,and takes 53 students from a class of a senior high school in Shandong Province as the research objects.Under the theoretical guidance of Theme-rheme Theory,this study carries out a one-semester action research to explore the continuation writing steps and try to answer the following three questions:(1)What is the influence of Theme-rheme Theory on senior high school students’ interest of continuation writing?(2)What’s the influence of Theme-rheme Theory on senior high school students’ coherence of continuation writing?(3)What is the influence of Theme-rheme Theory on senior high school students’ scores of continuation writing?This study has three main conclusions.(1)After the application of Theme-rheme Theory in continuation writing,students’ interest in continuation writing is significantly improved,which is mainly manifested as the students’ rejection of continuation writing is reduced,the enthusiasm of class participation is improved and the confidence of continuation writing is enhanced.(2)After the application of Theme-rheme Theory in continuation writing,students’ writing coherence is enhanced.Students pay more attention to the development of the plot and language characteristics in the given text,construct the situational pattern consistent with the previous text,and creatively use the expression of the previous text in the writing,which contribute to the coherence of the content and language.(3)After the application of Theme-rheme Theory in continuation writing,the students’ scores has been improved.SPSS26.0 was used to analyze the pre-test and post-test data,and it was found that the average score of students’ writing increases from8.12 to 10.82,and the scores of the three dimensions including content,language and structure are improved.This study has two main values.First,this study can deepen students’ understanding of Theme-rheme Theory and writing coherence to improve their writing coherence and quality of continuation writing.Second,the application of Theme-rheme Theory can provide teaching reference of continuation writing for English teachers.
