Reading has always occupied an important position in English learning.With the tide of deep learning sweeping,English deep reading has also developed,and students’ English deep reading competency has gradually become the focus of attention.However,students’ English reading learning is still in a superficial state,and their English deep reading competency is insufficient.Teachers still take up the majority of the class time and students are in the position of passive learning.Students learn passively and have little chances to think and explore independently.With teachers as the guide,students as the main body,and students’ independent and cooperative inquiry as the basis,the inquiry learning model can stimulate students’ reading interest in the actual learning process,exercise students’ ability to find and solve problems,and thus promote the development of students’ divergent thinking,critical understanding and innovative thinking ability.Therefore,based on the theory of deep learning and social constructivism,this thesis aims to promote students to conduct inquiry learning in the reading class,to exert students’ autonomy and initiative,improve students’ English reading interest and deep reading competency.This thesis tries to answer three questions:(1)What is the current situation of English deep reading competency of senior high school students?(2)Does the students’ interest in English reading change after applying the method of inquiry learning?(3)Can inquiry learning enhance deep reading competency of senior high school students? The research object is the students of Class 3,Grade 1 of a senior high school in Liaocheng City,Shandong Province.Through questionnaires,tests and interviews,the author knows the current situation of students’ English deep reading competency and reading attitude,applies inquiry learning to the reading classes,and conducts three rounds of action research.After the action research,the author conducts questionnaires,tests and interviews again,and makes the research conclusion by analyzing relevant data.The research results show that after the adoption of inquiry learning,students’ interest in English reading and deep reading competency have been improved.Students have more sufficient chances for independent and cooperative inquiry,and their abilities of reasoning and judgment,critical and innovative thinking have been enhanced.This indicates that the inquiry learning in English reading teaching in senior high school is effective,and can be generalized.
