In Sense of Order,Gombrich divides “various rules of the surrounding environment” into three aspects: the rules of the natural environment, the rules of human behavior(namely “skills”),and the rules of artistic expression. This theoretical framework just paves a clue for this dissertation to interpret the unique beauty of "order" in Anni Albers’ weaving art and theoretical creation.Based on this clue, the dissertation tries to summarize and sort out three ways to interpret Anni Albers’ weaving art,and present her contribution and value to the field of design and art in the 20 th century.First of all, this dissertation analyzes how the “abstract geometric form”,a natural environmental law, affects Albers’ personal artistic style.Bauhaus’ s education and modernism’s advocacy of tracing back to the original made her recognize the importance of studying ancient weaving and conclude that art is a constant.Secondly, this dissertation explains how Albers uses “weaving”,the “rule of human behavior”,in her art through her artistic concept.Listening to the materials and building a grid in the warp and weft structure shows her determination to face the constraints in weaving;Balancing the relationship between machine and handwork and studying the development of loom are her methods to challenge the limiting conditions; For the product of weaving behavior,Albers established her personal pattern rule, and also extended the space language of fabric in the architectural rule. Finally, this dissertation introduces and summarizes the rules of Albers’ artistic expression,“on writing,on weaving”.In her studies of draft notation, studies made on the typewriter and screen printings, she used pen instead of line to weave on paper. But“Pictorial Weavings” is to write in the fabric with lines as pens. They both are qualitative breakthroughs of Albers in various challenges of weaving art.Under the guidance of these three aspects of order and rules,we can more easily understand the context of Albers’ learning and artistic creation,as well as her artistic style. It is Albers’ serious and rigorous research attitude,down-to-earth creation and innovative artistic spirit that have promoted the traditional weaving to the artistic level and occupied a place in modern art.At the same time,it has also had an impact on the beginning of modern fiber art.
