| Paying high value of linguistic and cultural diversity,Ecuador has put forward specific language plannings and policies to revive and protect indigenous languages as well as to promote foreign languages,which have created certain favorable conditions for the dissemination and development of Chinese in Ecuador.But it cannot be ignored that multilingual competition also restricts the dissemination and development of Chinese.As an important partner of “One Belt,One Road” initiative in South America,Ecuador’s language planning and its influence on the dissemination of Chinese in the region are of great significance and value.However,the existing studies are more concerned with Chinese language teaching and less on Chinese dissemination and education from the perspective of language planning.Drawing on the theories of language planning and language communication,the present study analyzes the language planning and the spread of Chinese language in Ecuador in three periods with the method of epochal and diachronic analysis,and explores the influence of language planning on Chinese language education and dissemination.First of all,on Kaplan and Baldauf’s language planning theory,this study analyzes the language planning of Ecuador during the Inca Empire,Spanish colonial period and Republican period to reveal the characteristics of their language planning.Then the author reviews the history of the development of Chinese language dissemination in the country,and discusses the current situation of Chinese language dissemination development from the perspective of Chinese language education.Further more,the opportunities and challenges brought by the language planning for Chinese local dissemination and development are discussed.Finally,suggestions are given with a view of promoting the further development of Chinese language education and dissemination in Ecuador.The findings of this study are as follows: first,the language planning of Ecuador is inherited and inclusive of foreign languages.At present,focusing on the revival and protection of indigenous languages and attaching importance to education and dissemination of languages from developed countries in Europe and America.Second,in the 1940 s,Chinese began to spread in Ecuador.After the millennium,Ecuador encouraged the development of foreign languages,Chinese language education in Ecuador entered a period of rapid development.However,Chinese language education in Ecuador is currently faced with such problems as scarcity of local teachers,over-reliance on Chinese teachers,serious loss of students and other problems,which restrict the development of Chinese language.Third,despite the favorable conditions,Ecuador’s language planning that revives and protects indigenous languages and attaches importance to European and American languages also constrained the development of Chinese language to a certain extent.Fourth,proposed suggestions include: to take full advantage of the opportunities for Sino-Ecuadorian cooperation by uniting private forces so as to promote top-level design;to strengthen the construction of and stable local teachers of high-quality,and to develop targeted localized textbooks and online resources.This research explores the influence of language planning on the development and dissemination of Chinese language in Ecuador,which may provide reference for China to carry out Chinese language education and dissemination in Ecuador and South America,and promote the development of Chinese language. |
