| The teaching ability of overseas Chinese volunteers cannot be neglected as it affects or even determines the quality of their teaching.Although numerous researchers have paid closer attention to the teaching ability of Chinese volunteers,the conceptions of teaching ability are not on the same page at present.Furthermore,only a few studies include the aspect of teaching ability,so the teaching ability system of Chinese volunteers hasn’t been sufficiently formed.Hence,exploring the components of overseas Chinese volunteers’ teaching ability is vital as it is also a fundamental model for carrying out relevant research in the field of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages.This study sets up a model of teaching ability based on the theory of Competency Model,utilizing both qualitative and quantitative methodologies to ascertain the key factors affecting the teaching ability of overseas Chinese volunteers.Firstly,the method of text analysis is applied to distinguish the first and second indexes of the capability index system utilizing a corpus whose material principally comes from 34 related literatures,5 domestic and foreign relevant competence standard texts,and 300,000 volunteer self-reflection articles published on the official platform of We Chat called“Confucius Institute”.Then,the competence system is modified and the specific indicators are defined based on the semi-structured interviews with 5 experts and 15 excellent overseas Chinese volunteers.Finally,AHP is employed to calculate the weight of each competence index to create a teaching competency index system.According to the analysis,the teaching competency system of overseas Chinese volunteers consists of 3 first-level indexes and 20 second-level indexes.The following 7indexes have significant impacts: basic Chinese knowledge,language expression ability,classroom management ability,teaching content distribution ability,teaching method selection,dynamic adjustment ability,and cross-cultural adaptation ability.Meanwhile,the system emphasized teachers’ cognitions of their roles should be highlighted for the cultivation of Chinese volunteers’ teaching abilities in the future.Based on the above analysis,the issues that students majoring in TCSOL at various universities in terms of developing their teaching abilities are as follow: the training objectives for Chinese volunteers’ teaching abilities are neither systematic nor comprehensive;more attention needed to be paid in the curriculum;the management of outbound volunteers needs to be improved.To tackle these problems,the study refers to schemes and techniques accordingly.Such as reshaping the cultivation goals of teaching ability,setting up a curriculum system which gathers the “knowledge”,“skills” and “quality”,optimizing the structure of teachers,and strengthen teachers’ quality.This study illustrates the components of Chinese volunteers’ teaching abilities in a non-native language environment.The construction of the ideal teaching ability index system of overseas Chinese volunteers will provide guides for the enrollment and training of volunteers in the future,and will promote high-quality development of TCSOL. |
