Since the reform and opening up,China’s basic education reform has been developing continuously,and its direction has shifted from the stage of emphasizing the basic knowledge and basic skills of the subject value to the stage of educating people to improve students’ quality and cultivate students’ core quality.As an important learning content to implement the core literacy,the selection and design of the theme of the textbook has become the top priority in the preparation process.What theme to choose,how to choose the theme,and how to organize the theme have become the new strengths of the update and progress of our textbooks.The study focused on Wonders,America’s first language textbook guided by the Common Core State standards,Wonders unit theme module compilation characteristics are analyzed from three aspects,including the process of unit theme module compilation,column design and cultural content,under the background of American educational philosophy,common core state standards and unit theme compilation concept,in order to reveal its cultural connotation and compilation characteristics and offer reference for the compilation of Chinese textbooks in primary schools in our country.This thesis makes a quantitative and qualitative analysis of Wonders’ unit theme module through literature research and content analysis.Based on the theory of cultural classification,the quantitative analysis takes Wonders’ unit theme,lesson theme and unit text content as the main research object,and analyzes the characteristics of the unit theme module in the selection of cultural content from the dimensions of time,space and content.The qualitative analysis includes two parts: the process analysis of unit theme compilation and the analysis of unit theme module column design.The former interprets the influencing factors and power game in the process of unit theme compilation from the perspective of static and dynamic textbook research,while the latter focuses on the functions and links of the four columns of unit theme module,unit problem,unit introduction and illustration.The study summarizes four characteristics of the Wonders unit theme module: first,the scope of the unit theme is inclusive,which is mainly reflected in the attention to the culture and life of different times in the time dimension;The understanding and appreciation of the national culture and other national cultures in the space dimension;Focusing on the text in different fields in the content dimension has constructed a three-dimensional unit theme culture system.Secondly,the unit theme attaches importance to the situation,which is mainly reflected in the emphasis on the students’ sense of reality and experience in the learning process.Thirdly,the unit theme shows cohesion,which is mainly manifested in the gradient changes in difficulty and depth of unit themes in different periods,unit themes in the same learning period,unit themes and lesson themes,and their consideration of the logical structure of knowledge and the law of students’ cognitive development.Fourth,the theme of the unit focuses on education,which is mainly reflected in the concern for students,students with all-round development and students facing the world under the practical language view of linking language and life.Nevertheless,Wonders still has some problems,such as heavy unit content,low compatibility between individual selected articles and themes,and high requirements for teachers and students.With the theme unit arrangement style,Wonders’ unit theme module compilation features have the following reference value for the compilation of Chinese textbooks for primary schools in China: implement student-based education on the concept focus,and give consideration to sensibility and rationality;In the theme design,control the unit theme and unit learning;On the column structure,construct the learning situation and focus on the dynamic process;Focus on three dimensions in content selection to enrich the theme content;Grasp the unit positioning in the structure arrangement to realize systematic learning.
