A Study On The Landscape Painting Of Zhang Zongcang

Zhang Zongcang(1686--1756),born in Wuxian county,Jiangsu Province,was a court landscape painter in the mid-Qing Dynasty.This paper aims to restore Zhang Zongcang’ s image by sorting out the records in the painting history,and analyze the origin of Zhang’ s landscape painting style and the characteristics of his landscape painting.Based on this,the paper explores the basic features of the palace landscape painting in the middle Qing Dynasty,and discusses the relationship between the palace landscape painting in the middle Qing Dynasty and Zhang Zongcang.Through literature research,it is found that Zhang Zongcang was appointed as the chief book of Weihe in the Yongzheng year,transferred to the chief book of Lihe in the eleventh year of Qianlong,and served as the county magistrate in the twelfth year.In the sixteenth year of Qianlong’s first tour to the south,he presented his paintings to the palace with the help of Gao Bin.Meanwhile,his success in presenting his paintings was also related to the friendship between Yinglian and Shen Deqian.By means of form analysis and image study,this paper believes that the style of Zhang’s landscape painting originates from Lou Dong,inheriting and breaking through his master Huang Ding.In addition,his landscape painting master method of the ancients,to learn more from Ni Huang,and travel to the mountains and rivers also had an impact on his painting creation.Zhang Zongcang’s landscape paintings made a breakthrough in the layout of the picture,and his landscape paintings were highly appraised by Emperor Qianlong.His works were influenced by the Qing Dynasty palace landscape painting.Compared with the early period,the imperial landscape painting of the Qing Dynasty began to recover from the Northern Dynasty.The reason is related to the Qianlong Emperor’ s aesthetic appreciation of art.In order to explore the real landscape,the court painters explored the relationship between painting and nature in the pictures and created a large number of realistic paintings.Zhang Zongcang’ s breakthrough in the layout of the picture is related to this trend.While Zhang Zongcang was influenced by the palace painting style in the middle Qing Dynasty,his paintings also influenced the creation of landscape painting in this court.
