The impact of language testing on participants and a range of activities in education is known as backwash.The research on the backwash effect of language testing at home and abroad mainly focuses on large-scale tests such as the national professional proficiency test and the college entrance examination,while the research on the backwash effect of oral English testing in junior high school is very lacking.The goal of "expression and communication" in the language proficiency stage of junior high school graduates should reach Level 3.According to the requirements of the "Implementation Plan for Promoting the Reform of the Examination and Enrollment System for High School Students in Xiangyang City"(Xiang Jiao Fa [2019]No.59),the oral English test will be added to the new high school entrance examination in Xiangyang City from 2022.According to the requirements of the new curriculum standards,the current research situation of backwash effects,and the actual situation of the reform of the new secondary school entrance examination in Xiangyang,the author conducted a study on17 English teachers from the Second High School of Xiangyang High Technology and over 500 students from grades 7 to 9 in the junior high school department,to explore how the new oral English test in Xiangyang City has backwash effects on the teaching and learning of oral English in junior high schools,and put forward suggestions from different perspectives based on the enlightenment obtained from the research results.The results show that the newly added oral English test in Xiangyang Middle School Entrance Examination has had a backwash effect on many aspects of junior high school English teaching and learning,but the degree of backwash varies,and the overall positive backwash effect is greater than the negative backwash effect.The main performance is that teachers have consciously increased the amount of oral training in daily teaching and arranging exercises,and different class types will consider the proportion of oral English more when setting up,and pay more attention to oral English teaching in specific classroom teaching;The vast majority of students have greatly increased their emphasis on oral English,showing a diverse trend in the content and methods of oral English learning.Even a few students who are accustomed to "dumb English" have made efforts to adjust to better adapt to exam requirements.However,there are also concerns among teachers about the inaccurate evaluation of oral English testing machines,the lack of professional equipment for daily oral English teaching in the classroom,and the lack of professional training for teachers in oral English teaching at this stage;There are also some students who have upgraded from township primary schools to urban middle schools,as well as parents,who are more concerned about the oral English test in the middle school entrance examination.Based on the results of the study,the author provides suggestions to teachers,students,parents,schools and education department from different perspectives.In the future,while continuing to exert the positive backwash effect of the oral English test in the middle school entrance examination,how to effectively reduce its negative backwash effect should be more concerned and considered by all sectors of society.
