Since ancient Greece,"God" has been the core category in the history of western philosophy, and it is an important object and concept that all philosophy cannot avoid.Marx and Engels, born in Europe in the 19 th century, were deeply influenced by the tradition of western philosophy. On the basis of the previous understanding and criticism of God,Marx and Engels also included "God" in their own research scope, and opened up a critical path of God that is fundamentally different from the previous ones.Marx and Engels were atheists, but they were not atheists at the beginning, but gradually walked out of the belief in religious theism in the later realization of life and academic research. There are three stages and two turns in this process. The first is the turn of atheism and communism in the period of the Rhine and the German and French Yearbook, which mainly expresses Marx and Engels’ turn from affirmation to negation of religious theism; The second is the gradually formed historical materialism after the Outline of Feuerbach, which shows that Marx and Engels’ understanding of God has gradually become dialectical and transcendent, and they no longer have a simple affirmative or negative attitude towards it,thus achieving a scientific and historical grasp of "God".The main content of Marx and Engels’ criticism of God formed on the basis of this process can be divided into three parts, including Marx and Engels’ profound interpretation of the nature of God,the historical investigation of the generation, development and extinction of God,and the dialectical understanding of the role of God.Marx and Engels’ profound understanding of the nature of God constitutes the basic concept and theoretical premise of their subsequent criticism of God.The historical investigation of the generation, development and disappearance of God is the historical combing of Marx and Engels on the generation and disappearance of God,and the concentrated reflection of their dialectical, historical and scientific criticism of God.The dialectical understanding of the historical role of God is the realistic investigation of their social and historical role of God,which constitutes an important aspect of their criticism of God.Marx and Engels’ critical investigation of God was completed after a period of time and in the process of surpassing the predecessors.Marx and Engels’ critical theory of God is a criticism based on the criticism of traditional theology,Hegel,Feuerbach and the whole private ownership society. This critical activity has promoted the transformation of Marx and Engels from Feuerbachism to historical materialism, realized the transcendence of the way that the old view of history interprets history with spiritual movement, and formed the key aspect and important "foundation" of Marxism.Marx and Engels’ critical theory of God provides a core theoretical support for how we treat God and how to deal with religious issues in the contemporary era,and provides scientific guidelines and methods for the CPC to deal with religious issues that have been localized in China.
