| Before the outbreak of the War of Resistance against Japan, there was only one higher medical education institution in Wuhan,Hubei Provincial Medical University, which was later closed due to the war. Thus, there was no medical university in Wuhan or even in the entire Hubei region before 1943.In the 1930 s and 1940 s,Chen Cheng was in charge of Hubei and carried out "building a new Hubei","planned education" and established four colleges of agriculture, education, medicine and engineering,so that there was a higher medical education institution in Hubei. The establishment of Hubei Provincial Medical College is an important event in the history of higher medical education in Wuhan and Hubei, which not only restored the higher medical education forced to be interrupted by the war,but also could cultivate the urgent medical talents in response to the needs of the times. In addition, the development of the medical school itself also reflects the development of higher medical education in Hubei. The idea of establishing the Hubei Provincial Medical College came from Chen Cheng’s plan to build a new Hubei, but the eventual establishment of the medical school could not have been possible without Zhu Yubi, who returned from studying in Germany and was interested in building his native Hubei, and a group of people who were interested in medical education.Through the efforts of President Zhu Yubi and others, the college hired a group of professors with teaching or medical experience, enrolled a group of students mainly from Hubei Province, and also accepted the Senior Medical Vocational School as an annex to the medical school, and implemented a more strict teaching management model influenced by German medical education. After the victory of the War of Resistance against Japan, the Hubei Provincial Medical College was also on the list of educational demobilization in preparation for the relocation to Wuhan.During the process of moving back to Wuhan, disputes over the school site were a frequent problem for Zhu Yubi. From the initial selection of Jianghan High School and the 158 th Hospital of the Japanese Army as the site,to the forced acceptance of the former medical university site in the Two Lakes Academy as the new site, the Hubei Provincial Medical College was in frequent negotiations with various institutions. In addition to this, the Hubei Provincial Medical College had many problems with other institutions when renting housing. While resolving the problems arising from the relocation process, the Hubei Provincial Medical College was also gradually improving its own establishment and facilities and promoting the development of its teaching management. At the same time, prices were rising and the social environment was harsh,so that the original publicly funded benefits were no longer available. The first batch of graduates from the medical school finally graduated in 1949,and the training of medical personnel at Hubei Medical College came to fruition. As the only institution of higher medical education in Hubei during the War of Resistance against Japan, the Hubei Provincial Medical College had a crucial position in Hubei Province, and its establishment and development would reflect the overall state of medical education in Hubei at that time. From its establishment and development to its relocation to Wuhan, the Hubei Provincial Medical College experienced several setbacks, reflecting the difficulties in the development of higher education in Hubei during the war. However, compared with similar institutions,it is obvious that the medical school was not valued by Hubei Province, and its effectiveness was not so significant that the medical school of Shanghai Tongji University School of Medicine was moved to Wuhan during the restructuring of faculties in the 1950 s,which indicates that the development of higher medical education in Hubei in the 1940 s was not optimistic. |
