| As an important factor of adolescents’ self-development,self-esteem,especially as an important element and influencing factor of adolescents’ social adaptation,profoundly shapes their physical and mental development and social adaptation.Previous studies have shown that self-esteem is closely related to adolescents’ emotions and problematic behaviors.Prevention of low self-esteem among adolescents and how to intervene to improve their self-esteem have become one of the key issues of education.Family is the key environmental factor influencing for individual growth.As an important factor and element in family,family socioeconomic status has a profound impact on adolescents.Meanwhile,recent studies have found that growth mindset is related to self-esteem levels.Based on this background and the development and real life of adolescents,this study aimed to examine the association between family socioeconomic status and adolescents’ self-esteem,as well as the underlying mechanism-the potential mediating role of growth mindset;on this basis,an empirical intervention study was carried out to explore whether the intervention course based on growth mindset can improve growth mindset and further enhance adolescents’ self-esteem.This study includes two sub-studies.In Study 1,a questionnaire survey was used to investigate the relationship between family socioeconomic status,growth mindset,and adolescents’ self-esteem,and the underlying mechanisms among 816 junior high school students in Guangdong Province.Based on the results of Study 1,Study 2 designed an intervention study by designing education curriculum of growth mindset and analyze the intervention outcome.From Study 1,two classes with moderate or low family socioeconomic status,growth mindset and self-esteem scores and no significant difference were selected and randomly divided into experimental and control groups.The experimental group received intervention in a 45-minute growth mindset course for six consecutive weeks,while the control group did not receive any intervention related to growth mindset during this period.Compare the pre-and post-test data analysis between the experimental group and the control group to explore the intervention effect of the growth mindset education curriculum on improving the self-esteem level of adolescents.The research conclusions are as follows:(1)There is a significant positive correlation between family socioeconomic status and adolescents’ growth mindset.There is a significant positive correlation between family socioeconomic status and adolescents’ self-esteem;There is a significant positive correlation between growth mindset and adolescents’ self-esteem.(2)Growth mindset plays a partial mediating role between family socioeconomic status and adolescents’ self-esteem.(3)The course of growth mindset can significantly improve adolescents’ growth mindset,thereby improving their self-esteem.To sum up,this study explored the internal mechanism between family socioeconomic status and adolescents’ self-esteem,expanding relevant research in this field.And designed a growth mindset education course to improve the level of growth mindset and self-esteem of adolescents.The research results have certain research implications and educational significance.Firstly,parents and teachers should pay attention to the development of adolescents’ growth mindset,provide an environment conducive to the development of growth mindset for adolescents,provide certain support and strategies,and promote the development of adolescents’ self-esteem.Secondly,schools should attach importance to the education of adolescents’ growth mindset,and guide students to cultivate their own growth mindset through taking growth mindset courses and establishing a class cultural environment for growth mindset,thereby promoting the development of their self-esteem. |
