A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Practice Of Research Methods For Complexity Theory In Applied Linguistics(Excerpt)

The application of complex dynamic system theory,as a relatively new theory,is to find ways through observation and understanding of the process to improve the outcome.In this sense,the selection of the monograph Research Methods for Complexity Theory in Applied Linguistics is of great practical significance.Research Methods for Complexity Theory in Applied Linguistics,our translation material is characterized as the academic text.This monograph gives a detailed description of the development and application of complex dynamic system theory,which is consistent with the informative text based on Peter Newmark’s text-type theory.The semantic translation and communicative translation illustrated in the text-type theory is helpful for guiding the translation process and the translation analysis of this academic text,defining the functions of texts,and proposing corresponding translation strategies based on them.Therefore,through the translation practice,the concepts and characteristics of academic texts were analyzed and summarized under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s translation theory.In the translation process,the translator found he had to face the challenges of the interpretation of basic special concepts in different disciplines,the frequent occurrence of long and complex sentences,and conveying the academic knowledge of the original text to the readers.Therefore,in the preparation stage of translation,the translator carefully read the original text to comb through the specialized knowledge with the aid of experts in this field,familiarized the styles of the original text and set down the translation strategies to convey the information in the target text.Then,during the translation,the translator,under the guidance of Newmark’s translation theory,defined the text type of the selected material and applied the translation method based on semantic translation and communicative translation.This report explores the characteristics of academic texts in three aspects with the method of case analysis: words,syntax,and discourses.And this report tries to introduce feasible experiences and provide suggestions for translation learners and translators engaged in the translation of academic texts.To put it in more detail,at the lexical level,the translation of terminology and polysemic words are discussed.Based on the semantic translation,limited semantic meanings in the original text are retained and literal translation and other methods are used to translate the words.At the syntactical level,the translation of long and complex sentences is discussed.To create effect that experienced by readers of target language same within the source language,methods such as splitting,restructuring,and morphological transformation are used for translation.And the translation of the passive voice is also analyzed.At the discoursal level,this report discusses the translation of logic,the cohesion and coherence of discourses.This translation practice chooses communicative translation as the main theoretical framework and applied the translation method under the principles of communicative translation.And semantic translation is used as complementary and supportive guidance for this translation task.
