On the basis of Halliday’s Register Theory,this translation report is for the English translation of Chapter Two in An Introduction to Modern Terminology(Updated Edition),an academic work authored by Professor Feng Zhiwei.In accordance with the three elements in Halliday’s Register Theory,dozens of typical samples are selected for analyses,and the translation approaches and methods of professional terms,passive sentences and non-subject sentences are summarized.An Introduction to Modern Terminology(Updated Edition)is a work which concerns a systematic introduction to terminology.In order to accurately convey the basic knowledge of terminology to readers,the original text contains a large number of professional terms as well as formal and objective expressions.In accordance with the field of Register Theory,terms are classified into medical terms,astronomical terms and nautical scientific and technical terms for scientific translation.In accordance with the tenor of Register Theory,the tenor of the original text is reflected in the relationship between the author and the reader,so the expression is objective and neutral.A large number of Chinese passive sentences in the text embodies the objectivity.In the translation practice,it is necessary to carefully distinguish these Chinese passive sentences and realize the objective correspondence between the original text and the translation.In accordance with the information structure of the mode,it is found that the original text uses a lot of expressions without subject.Hence,the sentences without subjects are translated into the target language to meet the native expressions in English in the process of translation practice.This translation practice proves the feasibility of using Register Theory to translate An Introduction to Modern Terminology(Updated Edition)and will further expand the application of this theory.At the same time,the translation practice of terminology works under the Register Theory will further enrich the English translation of Chinese terminology works and contribute to the English translation practice of terminology works.
