The measure of sediment color reflectance has become increasingly important as an analytical tool for sediment physical properties. Sediment composition and mineralogical constituents can exert primary and local influence on color reflectance, so sedimentary environment, sedimentary process and material source can be inferred by sediment color spectral. So far lots of studies have focused on sediment in deep sea and semi deep sea, but little on sediment in shallow sea.Study method of sediment color reflectance in shelf has been established based on lots of investigative studies, obtained more than 7000 units of data of color reflectance using Minolta CM-2002 Spectrophotometer from 165 cores in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea, illustrated the distributional rules of color reflectance in sediment of the shelf of south Yellow Sea, the shelf of north East China Sea shelf and Okinawa Trough for the first time.We contrasted color reflectance with grain size, elements, detrital minerals and magnetic susceptibility in surface sediment The results indicate that color reflectance is correlated very closely with bulk sediment, and SiO2, carbonate, organic matter, heavy mineral content and detrital mineral content that control variance of L*,a*, b* and reflectance in sediment, and first derivatives of 420-450nm and 530-570nm reflectance have proxy significances for sediment composition which are carbonate and Fe3+/Fe2+ in clay respectively.Three principal factors had been produced using the first derivative of the sediment reflectance as variables by factors analysis method, which indicate three kinds material source that are finer grain terrigenous sediment (fine sand and silt), terrigenous carbonate and biologic carbonate respectively. The trends of traveling and enriching that material sources had given. Combining principal factors scores, a* and first derivative of 555nm reflectance, we discussed modem sediment environment in shelf of the Yellow Sea and East China Sea.
