Algae, as favorite sources of marine secondary metabolites, contain rich kinds of bioactive compounds. The study on marine algae chemical constituents and its bioactivities was carried out to search for bioactive leading compounds from marine organisms. The literatures regarding the chemical investigation of marine algae in nearly 10 years have been searched and summarized. The literatures about the secondary metabolites of green algae, brown algae and red algae have been reviewed. The bioactive screen of ethanol extract of five marine algae, which were collected from Naozhou Island, south sea of China, was designed to searching for bioactive compounds. The algae include one green alga C. basiretorsa Setchell and four red algae A. spicififera (Vahl) Boerg, L. tristicha Tseng. Chang et Xia, A. taxiformis (Delile) Trevisan and P. tenuis Okam. Standard MTT method was used for testing cytotoxicity of ethanol extracts against human cancer cell lines KB, Bel-7402, PC-3M, Ketr3 and MCF-7. The inhibitory activity of extracts against Na+,K+-ATPase was carried out on enzyme mode. The inhibitory activity of extracts against dog vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation was also screened by MTT method. The results showed that some extracts have bioactivities. To study the chemical constituents of the green alga Chaetomorpha basiretorsa Setchell aiming at searching for bioactive natural products. 36 compounds were isolated by various chromatographic techniques including column chromatography over normal phase silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 gel and reverse phase HPLC as well as recrystallization. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic methods including IR, MS, 1D, 2D NMR and X-ray techniques. Compounds 1~3 were new compounds; compounds 13, 21 were new natural products; compounds 4, 9, 12 were firstly obtained from marine organisms; all compounds were firstly isolated from Chaetomorpha genus. Cytotoxicity against human cancer cell lines KB, Bel-7402, PC-3M, Ketr3 and MCF-7 and inhibitory activity against dog vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation were screened by MTT method. Some purify compounds showed bioactive. The investigate of chemical constituents of the red alga Acanthophora spicifera (Vahl.) Boergesen was carried out and 13 compounds were isolated by various chromatographic techniques including column chromatography over normal phase silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 gel and reverse phase HPLC as well as recrystallization. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic methods including IR, MS, 1D and 2D NMR techniques. Compounds A1, A2 were new compounds and compound A3 was new natural product. Cytotoxicity against human cancer cell lines KB, Bel-7402, PC-3M, Ketr3, MCF-7, A549, A2780 and HCT-8 and inhibitory activity against dog vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation were screened by MTT methods. Some purify compounds showed bioactive. In order to screen the in vitro bioactivity of 10 compounds from Rhodomela Confervoides and investigate the antitumor activities of ethanol extract from R.confervoides (EERC) on S180 of mouse. Cytotoxicity of 10 compounds was obtained by SRB and MTT assays. S180 mice were used to evaluate the antitumor activities in vivo of EERC (Cytoxan as positive drug). LD50, tumor inhibition rate, indices of thymus and spleen, multiplication of spleen lymphocyte (MTT assay), IgA, IgG, IgM and apoptosis rate of spleen lymphocyte were detected, respectively. The data were analyzed by software SPSS. Five compounds showed cytotoxicity in SRB and MTT assays. Tumor inhibition rate of EERC in middle-dose group was significantly higher than that in the other groups, while the indices of thymus and spleen were increased obviously. Groups of EERC showed inhibition on multiplication of spleen lymphocyte. Concentration of IgA and IgG maintained a stable level in all groups. IgM was increased significantly in middle-dose group of EERC. Apoptosis rate of spleen lymphocyte was increased in middle- and high- dose groups. These results indicated that some compounds from Rhodomela Confervoides(Huds.
