Bubbles are important to many processes of interest in geophysics, as well as in thedisciplines such as biogeochemical and physical couplings between Surface Oceanand lower atmosphere. Bubble plumes from breaking waves are either dominant orvery important to processes as diverse as air-sea gas transfer, surface microlayerentrainment, and enhanced the air-sea turbulence processes. Up to now, bubble plumeobservations are mainly limited to the laboratory, field observations data are scarce. Inorder to better understand the generation and variations of breaking wave bubbleplumes, a high quality video CCD system is designed to measure the bubble sizedistribution in the laboratory and field, as follow:1. the Under-water optical bubbles measurement system (OBMS) is designedwith high resolution CCD camera, which is main made up of an CCD opticalimaging unit,a background lamp-house and a video system.2.Using the equipment, bubbles size distribution can be detected in lab and in thefield, and bubbles production and bubbles breaking are showed.3.Bubbles edge information enhanced by edge detecting and can be gotautomatically, at the same time, number of bubbles and bubbles size distributionalso can be calculated automatically. With above results, bubbles averagevolume flux, air -sea gas exchange flux and heat flux can be gained.
