Due to the high glass-forming ability (GFA), large supercooled liquid region, high strength and toughness, Zr-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) are most hopeful to serve as structural materials or functional materials, and have attracted much attention in the last two decades. Till now, however, only a few Zr-based BMGs with both good GFA and superior properties, such as high strength, large plasticity and good corrosion resistance, have been discovered. The extensive and systematical research on the GFA and properties of ternary Zr-Al-Ni system, which is one of important members in the family of Zr-based BMGs, is insufficient. Therefore, in the present thesis, the thermal properties, GFA, and mechanical properties of Zr-Al-Ni glassy alloys were systematically investigated. In addition, series of BMGs basing on the optimized Zr-Al-Ni glassy alloys exhibiting outstanding mechanical properties and good corrosion resistance, together with critical diameter for glass-formation (dc) over one centimeter were developed. The thesis consists of four parts mainly:1. The thermal properties and GFA of ternary Zr-Al-Ni glassy alloys were investigated by the thermal analysis of DSC and DTA, and copper mold casting method, respectively. The ternary glassy alloys possess supper cooled liquid region ATx over 60 K in the composition range of 54
