Fabric CAD system provides a tool for designing textiles, This tool is very important for textile industry in quick response to the market. Nowadays, the fabric CAD system at home only imitates fabrics by the weave, yarn and pattern, without considering the final usage, the image imitated is lack of a vivid effect, so providing a 3D image of the fabric's appearance with a reality effect becomes an urgent matter.To get a image with reality effect, a geometry model of the woven fabric has to be constructed by computer, then the luminosity of the surface of the fabric be calculated according to the environment situations, by doing this, the design image may show a vivid effect. Factors concerning the 3D image were thoroughly analyzed in this investigation.It is believed that the fabric texture, drape, luster and wrinkle, the environment as well as the lighting condition are the major factors which affect the fabric appearance. On the other hand, the distance between the viewer and the fabric will determine which factors become the major concern. Fabric texture and design may be important parameters for closer observation. Anyway, when the observation distance increased to 50 or more than 50 centimeters, wrinkle, draping, lightness and large patterns may be more important than other factors to impress the viewer.One piece of fabric may show different effect in different environment. Thus when doing the 3D image the environment situation has to be taken into consideration for a more natural and real image.Some previous research work have been carried out in this field. Most of them are realized by mapping a 2D image then cover it to the 3D object. In this project, a general function is provided to map the texture of the 3D object with fabric structure , process technology. This method can modify the design easily, reduce the storing space, achieve a texture at high accuracy.Wrinkle exists at random on the fabric surface, Analysis was made on the wrinkle by using the rough victor theory, it is helpful for a vivid demonstration of the fabric texture.In order to have a better effect to imitate the reflection, projection and shadow, ray-tracing technology was employed. Technologies such as geometrical model, scenery, view selection, luminosity calculation, shadow, texture and anti-alias were used to improve the image effect, satisfactory viewing image was realized.
