Recently, many efforts have been paid to hydrogen production due to the rapid growing fuel cell technology, and catalytic conversion of alkane to hydrogen/syngas is one important route of several methods to supply hydrogen/syngas for fuel cell, Inthis paper, we developed firstly the in-situ sol-gel preparation method for the Ni-based monolith catalyst, which can be used in the partial oxidation of hydrocarbon at short contact time and high temperatures. It is proven that as prepared monolith catalyst possesses good thermal stability and carbon-resistance ability during the reaction.Then, studies on the catalytic conversion of n-heptane (as the typical component of gasoline) to hydrogen/syngas have been carried out. The results indicate that the homogeneous reaction could not be avoided during the heterogeneous catalytic reaction and the alkene delivered by the homogeneous reaction will result in carbon deposition easily. Consequently, a catalyst with good carbon-resistance ability would be necessary for a stable operation. Among several Ni-based catalyst, NiLiLa/γ-Al2O3 exhibited good catalytic ability, thermal stability and carbon-resistance ability during the catalytic conversion of hydrocarbon reaction, even with the existing of water. According to the equilibrium calculation and experiment results, the reaction mechanism was speculated, and it is believed that the reaction mechanism is not essential different from the conversion reaction of methane.
