The anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) comprises a series of vertical baffles to force the wastewater to flow under and over them, and ABR may be classified as a series of compartment. It is simple in design and improved biomass retention within reactor. This reactor system has been reported to have many advantages over other well established reactor systems; therefore ABR is one of the many types of high-rate anaerobic reactors presently attracting growing interests. Although attention has been paid to the use of this reactor system for the anaerobic treatment of industrial wastewaters, a thorough literature survey revealed no research of start-up , biological characteristics of anaerobic granular sludge , hydrolysis-acidification process and controlling methods. This paper studied peculiarity and controlling technology of ABR performance. First, the paper studied start-up of anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) and the feature of granular sludge forming during start-up. The Studies of The characteristics of pH, COD, VFA, the sludge of hydrolysis-acidification process and controlling methods in an anaerobic baffled reactor .Tracer studies were carried out in order to determine the mixing characteristics in ABR, combined characteristics of sludge-bed movement, set up kinetics model. Studied the biological characteristics of anaerobic granular sludge from anaerobic baffled reactor. The effect of organic loads and HRT on the performance of ABR, monitor pH, COD, VFA, gas production, analysis of purify function of the each compartment of anaerobic baffled reactor, put forward controlling measure. Pilot study on characteristics of anaerobic biological of PVA, pilot study on anaerobic baffled reactor treating PVA waste water, and several key parameter was acquired, hence it has an important scientific value.Result of the study indicated:(1) The results reveal that low organic loading rate is the key of start -up of reactor. The significant factor was the suitable anaerobic micro-organisms, hydraulic loading rate and b uffer. ABR w as s uccessfully s tart - up a nd formed granular s ludge i n t he 6 0d a t organic loading rate of 0.85 kgCOD/(m3.d) -1.50 kgCOD/(m3.d), hydraulic loading rateof 0.198 m3 / (m2 h), the buffer of effluent of 500mgCaCO3/L.Because the condition of each compartment was various, the feature of sludge was different. But the different granular sludge is composed of the filiform bacterium, which adsorption inertia matter, there ware plentiful holes in granular sludge, which supply the condition for the removing and degrading of matter.(2) The paper studied the cause and characteristics of hydrolysis-acidification period, and put forward the controlling method of recovered. The resulted revealed that the cause of hydrolysis-acidification was high organic load and short of alkaline in l#compartment of ABR, if uncontrolled, each compartment of ABR had been in the entire hydrolysis-acidification period, pH of each compartment decreased to 3.5~4.5, the influent COD was close to the effluent COD. The VFA production significantly increased to 1200mg/L. There was acidogenic bacterium predominating, (acidogenic bacterium has 106~7 /mL, clostridium has 102~4/mL). There were the remarkable difference in the physical characteristics of sludge. SVI of the sludge increased to 30mL/g, viscosity increased, bulking, fiercely acidy. This is further evidence that a relatively lower the specific methane production (0.188~0.547mL/gvss.h ) occurred in the four compartment compared to the specific methane production of normal system (20~50mL/gvss.h). Though the operation time prolonged, the reactor can't recover. A long tune will be required for recovery under controlling alkaline or organic load condition, the reactor can recover in 60 days under controlling alkaline and organic load.(3) Microbial composition the specific methane production activities, contents of coenzyme F420were determined in anaerobic granular sludge cultured in ABR reactor.
