| Pearl River Delta is one of the most important areas in China for its developedeconomy and convenient position. Environmental organic pollution in this area isbecoming heavier while the economy develops. Many kinds of organic contaminantshave been detected in surface water, drinking water, soil and sediments in bottom ofrivers. However, the status of groundwater is unknown yet. Large amounts ofinvestigation and systemic analysis on regional groundwater organic contaminationwere done in Pearl River Delta for the first time in this study. The results showed thatorganic contamination was ubiquitous in shallow groundwater, but the concentrationlevels were low in general. Contaminative degree is higher in northern area than thatin southern area. It was also found that groundwater sources' contaminated potentialwas clearly existed, and shallow groundwater have been contaminated in a smallrange in Guanghua Basin great groundwater source. Because of the limited scientificand technological level in China today, groundwater contaminative degree iscorrelative to economy, population density, discharged quantity of waste gas, waterand solid. Weather, hydrology and geology condition and vadose lithology in PearlRiver Delta were effective factors that prevent shallow groundwater from beingcontaminated.An effective approach to regional shallow groundwater organic contaminationresearch was founded in this dissertation. A large amount of reliable originalgroundwater quality data was obtained. A method was set up and successfully appliedto groundwater quality and contamination assessment and specific conclusions oncontamination degree in Pearl River Delta was drawn for the first time. Sources ofcontaminants and influential factors to contamination were also discussed. This studyresults are the basis of further researches on environmental organic contamination inthis area and relative studies in China, and it will provide theoretical support forgovernment in decision making.
