The combustion of biomass materials is a significant research area in the field of fire safety science. In mechanism, thermal decomposition acts as the preliminary process of ignition, combustion and fire propagation of biomass so as to generate the fuel available for biomass ignition and combustion. Biomass decomposition also determines the heat to some extent since the heat release rate in biomass combustion can be modeled by the product of fuel generation rate and the combustion heat of fuel. Therefore, revealing the physico-chemical kinetics of biomass decomposition and modeling the process will help understand the mechanism of biomass combustion. The kinetic model of biomass decomposition reflecting the complexity of decomposition reactions is useful for the modeling of biomass combustion and fire propagation.Biomass decomposition not only involves complicated chemical processes, but also includes complex physical processes such as heat transfer, mass transfer and their interactions. Up to now, modeling of the physical processes of biomass decomposition has achieved much progress. However, in the available physical models of biomass decomposition, relatively simple description of decomposition chemical kinetics is widely used. Therefore, a most important topic is the generalized physico-chemical decomposition model which reflects the complexity of both the chemical reactions and physical processes. This thesis aims at developing the data pre-treatment methods and kinetic analysis methods for the decomposition process of small-scale samples from Chinese forest combustibles; revealing the chemical kinetics of decomposition and proposing a kinetic model which provides chemical description for biomass decomposition; establishing the physico-chemical decomposition model which involves the physical process, chemical process and their interaction. The integrated model can be adopted as a decomposition sub-model in modeling of biomass ignition and combustion. The thesis is outlined as follows.Firstly, the integral approaches of thermal analysis (TA) and pre-treatment of TA...
