In the Concurrent Engineering, product assembly planning and assembly sequence generation using computer can guarantee assembly feasibility and optimization during actual product assembly procedure, and is significant in improving product quality, decreasing product cost and shortening product life cycle. Assembly sequence generation problem is the core of assembly planning, the precondition of evaluation, optimization and selection of feasible assembly sequence, the foundation of selecting assembly equipments and fixtures and the basis of realizing assembly procedure simulation.Due to the"combinational explosion"problem with the increasing of part number in the generation of assembly sequence, this article presents the methods of solving the problem of assembly generation of large-scale assembly products, which combines several technologies such as the knowledge-based system, virtual assembly and assembly sequence reasoning. Based on those technologies, the architecture of a knowledge-based virtual assembly sequence planning system (KVASPS) is constructed, and the methods and key technologies that realize it are studied in depth. The creative researches of this paper are as following:1. In order to overcome the limitation of solving large-scale assembly sequence generation problem using knowledge-based, reasoning and virtual assembly methods respectively, this article presents a knowledge-based virtual assembly sequence planning method, which integrates the advantages of automated assembly sequence planning and virtual assembly sequence planning. This method is a valid approach to solve large-scale assembly sequence generation problem.2. In order to ensure correct and efficient assembly generation of large-scale assembly and overcome the limitation of solving assembly sequence generation problem using cut-set method, a knowledge-based assembly sequence planning method and initial assembly model expansion theory is presented, based on which efficient automatic assembly sequence planning could be realized by using step-by-step methods. By this, the complexity of automatic assembly sequence generation is simplified.
