A separation technique using Liquid surfactant membranes. first developed by N·N·Li in 1968, has been noted as a novel method for an in creasing variety of separations. At presen, the wide commercial use of liquid surfactant membranes in separation processes has not yet been achieved mainly due to stability problems. In this paper, the stability of liquid sur factant membrane. in the aspects of swelling and breakage, has been studied theoretically and experimentally.A concept of effective concentration (?) of sur factants in membrane phase has been proposed. considering the high adsorption density of the emulsifier at the emulsion interfaces in LSM systems. The effective concentration of surfactant, Csef, can be estimated by Eq ( 1-10),( 1-13 ) and (1-14) .
