Thermographic and photothermographic imaging materials have grown in importance over the past decade. To provide a visible image, conventional silver halide-containing wet processed photographic imaging materials require the processing in aqueous bath. In contrast, thermographic and photothermographic materials provide users with a simple and nonpolluting heat development processing system. Therefore, thermal and photothermal imaging materials have attracted a great attention of researchers in science and technologies.Silver salt of behenic acid has been used as the silver source in the thermographic or photothermographic materials. Many properties of thermographic or photothermographic materials, e.g. transparency and required image density, are directly or indirectly dependent upon the crystal size and shape of silver behenates. The details, concerning silver behenate preparation are far less understood. Most publications on this topic are patents, which did not discuss a fundamental understanding, such as the effect of reaction conditions on the growth of silver behenate crystals. In addition, silver behenate thermal decomposition mechanism is still not clear. Especially, the gas products of the thermal decomposition...
