Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a complex and poorly understood mixture of organic polymers, which plays an important role in aquatic ecosystems. One of the physiochemical properties of DOM that has been widely studied is fluorescence, in particular on its applications in remote sensing, pollutant tracing, water quality monitoring and the study of oceanic carbon cycles. Fluorescence spectra obtained by excitation–emission matrices (EEMs) measurement contains detailed compositional information which can serve as a fingerprint of the organic compounds in the sample. Recently, EEMs coupled with multivariate data analysis has also been successfully applied to differentiate the types and sources of DOMs in natural waters. In this thesis, a comprehensive study has been carried out to apply fluorescence EEMs technique for the characterization of DOMs in BoHai Sea and JiaoZhou Bay. Based on the collection of systematic EEMs data for real world samples collected in the field, the feasibility and validity of the technique for pollution source tracing has been critically evaluated by using the principle component analysis and other chemometric. The main results are summarized as below:1. Characteristics of EEMs of water samples from Bohai Sea, Jiaozhou Bay, and 5 different pollution sources (HaiBo River in Jiaozhou Bay, Tiaohe River, Power plant, Papermill and Aquaculture area in Laizhou Bay) and their corresponding receptor coastal waters.(1) A comparison of EEMs of water samples collected from different areas reveals that the EEMs spectral features of the water are influenced significantly by the type and concentrations of pollutant input into the water.
