Groundwater is not only one of the important water resources for mankind's survival and development,but also an important factor of environment. Due to the unreasonable use of water resources and overexploitation of groundwater,in many areas of china has produced serious environmental problems. The hydraulic conditions and the chemical constituents of groundwater(groundwater depth and TDS,and so on), which are the primary factors to control the environmental conditions of groundwater. This article took our country typical area(Northwest Inland Basin and the North China Plain)with groundwater exploitation and environmental problems for examples, to systematically research and determine groundwater environmental index system. It provided the scientific basis and the management standard for reasonable groundwater exploitation, the maintenance and the protection of the geological and ecological environment of groundwater.Different regions, because the climate, the hydrogeological conditions and the water resources exploitation conditions are different, which appear great differences to the groundwater environmental problems. This research in view of our country Northwest Inland Basin, has elaborated and analyzed the ecosystem characteristic, groundwater environmental problems as well as how the problems produced. In reason this foundation, divided the artificial oasis and the natural oasis, analyzed and had determined the groundwater ecological environment target, proposed ecological environment critical target of groundwater in Northwest Inland Basin. Groundwater ecological environment index in Northwest Inland Basin mainly includes the groundwater ecology water level, the soil moisture content, the soil salt content, the TDS of . unconfined water., and so on. Among them, the most important groundwater ecological environmental index is the groundwater ecology water level. The groundwater critical depth in Northwest Inland Basin artificial oasis that prevented the soil salinification is 2.0~2.5m in defrosting time, 2.5~3.0m at spring irrigation beginning, 1.2~1.5m at the end of spring irrigation, 2.0~2.5m at the end of summer irrigation, 2.5~3.0m winter irrigation beginning, and 1.3~1.5m at the end of winter irrigation. In The Tarim River mainstream area, the reasonable groundwater ecology water level of natural plant community is 2.0~4.5m.The main groundwater environment problems in North China Plain are the geological-environmental problems, which are aroused by long-term groundwater overexploitation, containing groundwater dry up ,land subsidence, seawater intrusion...
