This thesis aims at the studies on the transition-metal catalyzeda andβposition C-C bond formation reactions of alcohols via C(sp3)-H activation/functionalization. This dissertation includes three chapters:Chapter 1:Minireviews of C-H activation/functionalizationThe C-H activation/functionalizations were classified in three types of hybridizations: C(sp)-H, C(sp2)-H, and C(sp3)-H. Some of the recently developed examples were described in this chapter. In addition, the direct functionalization of C(sp3)-H bonds adjacent to oxygen atoms were introduced particularly.Charter 2:a-Position C-H activation/functionalization of alcoholsRu(II)/Lewis acid mediated C-C cross-coupling reaction between alcohols and a novel iron-catalyzed C(sp3)-C(sp3) bond formation reaction via sp3 C-H activation between primary alcohols and olefins were developed. The wide range of substrates proved to be well tolerable. This protocol provided alternatively an economical and convenient strategy for the efficient access to structurally diverse secondary alcohols.Charter 3:p-Position C-H functionalization of alcoholsA novel RhCl(PPh3)3/BF3·OEt2 co-promoted C-C cross-coupling of alcohols atβ-position with aldehydes was achieved. This reaction could provide a diversity-oriented synthesis of a series of structurally interesting compounds, such as a,β-unsaturated aldehydes and ketones,1,3-diols, or polysubstituted tetrahydropyranes, depending on the structures of starting alcohols and aldehydes.
