The history of Chinese modern architecture is an important period for the modernization of Chinese architecture, especially the decade form 1927 to 1937, which was the key stage in its modernization. The great changes in the institution, composition of practitioners, materials technology and other aspects of Chinese architecture during this period had a profound influence on the development of Chinese architecture. This thesis takes its material from The Chinese Architect and The Builder, two professional academic journals on architecture which represented the mainstream of Chinese architecture from 1927 to 1937, and investigates this period's modernization process of Chinese architecture on the micro level by systematically sorting out and studying some papers on these two journals. It also conducts researches into "the generation of architecture trade corporations and the professionalization of practitioner communities" and "the modern transformation of construction technology system and building materials industry" from the perspective of human (architecture practitioner communities) and object (technology and materials).The thesis briefly reviews existing research achievements in relevant studying fields and determines the research object, research value, research target, research method and the overall structure of the thesis within the established category of material resource. Secondly, it comprehensively analyzes and discusses the two architecture professional academic journals The Chinese Architect and The Builder from the aspects of their tenet, content orientation, literature content and category and composition of authors, and on the basis of comparing and analyzing the involved content of the two journals, it discusses Chinese architectures'development status and characteristics during this period in terms of its practitioner communities, construction concept and relevant institutions. Then it expounds the development status of The Society of Chinese Architects and The Shanghai Builders'Association, the two most important new-type architecture trade associations during the history of Chinese modern architecture, including their origins, the development of their organization system, their internal and external public function and influence. It also expounds, the two new-type architecture trade associations' influence and effects on the professionalization process of practitioner communities, including their efforts in boosting the establishment of practitioners' professional norms, popularizing architecture professional knowledge and promoting professional education as well as researches on the development of professionalism in terms of building practitioners (architects in particular) at that period.Besides, on the basis of the modern Chinese construction phenomena recorded on the basic material resources, from the perspective of the introduction of construction technology theories and the application of its research results, domestic main building materials and the development of the device manufacturing and installation industry, it discusses the development of construction technology system and main building materials industries during that period and their influence on the modernization of Chinese architecture. Finally, on the basis of the research work stated above, the thesis generally concludes the research achievements, including the influence and effect of the generation and development of new-type architecture trade corporations in the 1920s and 1930s, the professional development of the Chinese architecture practitioner communities and the development of construction technology system and building materials industries on the modernization of Chinese architecture.The thesis is one of research achievements of the project A Study on the history of Chinese modern architecture based on the innovated idea and method, which supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.(Grant No.50838007)...
