A series of researches are developed for arch dam cracking analysis and its tensile stress control criterion:(1) Failure criterion for concrete in strain space. A four parameters failure criterion in strain space is researched and compared with the failure criterions for concrete in stress space and test results. Its adaptability and characteristic are verified.(2) Damage constitutive models for concrete. A new four-parameter equivalent strain for isotropy damage model is presented. By analyzing the damage model with it under multi-axial stress states, its practicability is testified by.(3) A method by controlling a single point displacement to implement multi-nodal proportional loading. Its feasibility for simulating the whole nonlinear loading curve is researched.(4) The embedded discontinuous method is used for analysis the interlayer in rock mass.By comparing with the regular finite element method, its feasibility for analyzing the interlayer in the massive structures and its merits and demerits are reviewed.(5) A local mesh encryption method is presented. According to the damage value and the precision value, the elements which will be encrypted and the size are determined. The incompatible arithmetic is used to deal with the relation between the old mesh and the new mesh. This method can deal with the difficulties caused by rough mesh and fine mesh.(6) Tensile stress control method and overload capacity for arch dams are studied. The method how to determine the tensile criterion for arch dam is presented. By modifying the variable load of different load condition to solve the maximum load which meets the control cracking range, the equivalent stress under this load is calculated. Different equivalent stresses for different arch dam are obtained by this method. The tensile control criterion will be gotten by using statistic analysis all the different equivalent stresses under different load condition. Its reasonablea and feasibility are discussed by analyzing Xiloudu arch dam under gravity and water pressure.
