Large generators are widely used in modern power system, absolutely occupied dominant productive position, theirs reliability and safety operation are decisive for offering high quality electric power to the whole society. Large generators are expensive apparatus and have complex structure. Once they were destroyed, they would need long time for repair, which would make much economic losing. Considering that our nation is short of electric power at present and in the future some years, that means almost all large generators are operation in full time, reserve capacity limited, so theirs safety and reliable are more important than ever. Condition monitoring and faults diagnosis are distinguished from relaying protection, relay work after faults but monitoring and diagnosis work before the faults' occurring. So condition monitoring and faults diagnosis for large generators have important real significance because which would alarm in faults' initial phase and prevent faults' occurring and expand.The research of large generator's condition monitoring and fault diagnosis is an important aspect of modern electrical engineering, and it is also a key technology for solving modern power system's safety, reliability and maintain service reasonable. In recent several decades, many countries have developed this area, and expanded corresponding technologies to application. Since 1980s, generator's condition monitoring and diagnosis have been discussed as central topic in SC-11 (rotating electric machine) committee of CIGRE's annual meeting. There is not a clarity boundary between the content of monitoring and diagnosis, the data from monitoring usually as diagnosis' evidence. Diagnosis use computer and software to clarify, locate and sure the severance of the fault and presents disposal plan further based on condition's monitoring data from sensors.
