Electroluminescence (EL) has been widely used as a tool to study the trap character, the charge storage and transport, the structure transformation and molecular motion in insulating polymers. The complication of the polymeric molecular structure and its motion will cause the EL spectra much more complex. In this thesis, the EL characteristics of several typical insulating polymers are the main research object. We have built an experimental set-up for detecting and resolving the EL signals, and analyzed their EL spectra. The EL can be used to study the degradation mechanism; meanwhile it also can be used to analyze material's electrical and optical characteristics. Evidently, EL is worthy in scientific research and engineering application.In terms of a key project supported by National Nature Science Foundation Committee (NSFC), we have established firstly in home an experimental set-up for measuring EL sprctra in insulating polymers. Under the condition without loading, the mean value of photo counter's dark noise is 16cps (test temperature : 20℃), its sensitivity is 2.3×10-17W; optical spectrometer's sensitivity is 3.0×10-17W, the resolution is not greater than 4nm, repetitive error is not greater than 2nm.This set-up's spectral resolution is one order of magnitude greater than that with interference filter, and the same with that obtained by Mary's research group's.The threshold electric fields of low density polyethylene (LDPE), poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), Dupont original polyimide films 100HN and inorganic nano-hybrid polyimide films 100CR are 1.2 MV/cm, 3.5 MV/cm, 2.8 MV/cm and 2.6 MV/cm, respectively.
