In this thesis the history and actuality of smart camera was introduced; the hardware and software foundations of realizing an smart camera was analyzed; the working theory and structure of a smart camera was also explained; the key technology of realizing an smart camera is presented. According to the demands of practical applications, a smart camera platform was designed. The algorithms for separating the defaults,getting its characters and then identifying it using wavelet transform is presented.Using the smart camera platform a lot of experiments have been done, and the satisfied results were gotten.This thesis includes two parts: one is the hardware design, the other is realization of the algorithms.Hardware realization is introduced in the first part of the thesis and the methods to realize it is presented, the difficulties appeared is analyzed and how to resolve them is also explained. A smart camera platform that can satisfy the needs for more applications with a little modification.The following are mainly used key techniques of the hardware realization:1) Using a sensor to send the image information to the smart camera system, by using few parts we increased precise of the image.2) Using two memorizes as a ping-pong structure we can not only gather the data from the sensor but also process the data in the same time. It improved the Real-time of system.3) Using the McBSP port of the DSP as a general I/O port and simulating the data transfer function by software to realize an I2C-BUS without other circuits.
