With the rapid development of automotive technologies, the conventional point-to-point communication means can hardly cope with the requirements of automotive electronic equipment control and data communications; thus, the automotive bus technology is an inevitable trend. In such a circumstance, how to build a high-speed communication channel in automobiles on the basis of the bus technology has naturally become a focal point of research in the automobile electronics field. At the present time, the use of low-voltage Power Lines for information high-speed carrier communication technology (PLC technology), due to advantages such as the ready availability of Power Lines, large communication capacity, no need to establish new lines, connection flexibility and low costs, is attracting intense attention in China and abroad. Considering the many similarities between automobile Power Lines and low-voltage Power Lines, the author of this thesis, on the recently completed Xiamen Kinglong project of"Control Bus on Large-sized Passenger Buses Utilizing CAN Protocol", used the Power-line carrier communication technology on automobiles, which took advantage of the automobile's existing Power-line as the carrier communication channel to achieve an digital transmission with a speed in excess of 1Mbit/s. This operation, which fulfills the requirements of low cost and high performance for automotive bus communication, represents a meaningful attempt in the research on automotive high-speed data transmission technology. As far as China is concerned, the application of the PLC technology to automobiles has been reported, but most articles about the application of PLC to automobiles are focused on the bus protocol and technological realization, with sufficient attention to the characteristics of the carrier communication channel of the automotive PLC technology; the limited number of related articles are mostly concerned with the effect of automobile noise on communication circuits. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to conduct an in-depth and systematic research on the characteristics of the carrier communication channel of automotive Power lines in the hope of contributing theoretically to the application of the PLC technology to automobiles.This thesis, first of all, provides a description of the significance of automotive high-speed bus and the technical requirements of the bus on communication channels. Furthermore, it elaborates on the current situation and development trends of domestic and foreign Power line carrier communication. On the basis of this elaboration and in combination with the features of automotive electric system, this thesis asserts that research on the"characteristics of automotive Power line carrier communication channels"should be focused on major factors which affect channel communication capabilities, such as the noise characteristics, transmission characteristics, transmission capacity, and modulation technology.
