The evolvement of Nordic landscape architecture from 1920 through 1970 is a great example in the world demonstrating the transformation between modernism and native landscape. I refer to this as modernism landscape in Nordic countries. The works of Landscape architects in the period have integrated the regionality and artistic quality, and formed design tradition of modern landscape in their nations merging with the pleasant gardens and parks for the Nordic. This dissertation provides an endless source of ideas for creating a look that succeeds in being both the high quality of landscape works and landscape regionalism, including a fusion of landscape and living in China, based on the similarly social system both China and Nordic countries. The dissertation mainly deals with modernism landscape in Nordic countries and quantitive description for design features of its works for the purpose of communication, and explores the foundation to form these features, viewing from the history of landscape design. It divides into four parts: starting with the works of well-known landscape architects in Nordic countries and their main characteristics, frameworking the pattern of design language in terms of linguistic methodology, followed by quantitive study with schematic illustration for design language to based on the framework and the approach of typology, finally analyzing the related reasons leading to form the characteristics of modernism landscape in Nordic countries. Conclusion was drawn from an examination for Nordic landscape in the period of 1920-1970 and from the study for its design language is as followed:1. Making a summary of the development of Nordic landscape in the period of 1920-1970.2. Quantitive study via words and schematic illustration for design features. This study confirms that the qualitative description for the design features is able to be expressed quantitively and clearly by the pattern frameworked with vocabulary and syntax..3. Agricultural & natural landscape and design tradition are concluded as the most important of the discussed inner-factors to influence the creation of design characteristics, as Arts and Crafts Movement and Functionalism the outer-factors.
